Back to School!
Back in 2022, we were invited to create original characters and visuals for the first Back to School Multplayer Game Jam inside Itch.io, organized by Photon and The Global Game Jam team. Inspired by this theme, we chose to create playful characters, following the multiplayer theme and back to school vibe!
Doodling away!
Creating wacky little dudes and dudettes was so much fun. We went with the concept of school stationery, humans and creatures from the game world interacting in a multiplayer scenario. Keeping it playful, we started drawing and doodling what came to mind, very much we did in our school days.
Handmade?
After that we went straight to building styleframes to use in the teaser. We wanted to print out each animation frame and draw over everything back on paper with pens and crayons (maybe an idea for a Directors Cut for the future)...
but with the time and resources we had, we just tried our best to give everything some crunch, texture, and break the cleanliness of the vector lines the best we could digitally.

What if we could animate these notebook doodles back in the day? The characters had simple designs on purpose to make things easier on this step. We did everything on Adobe Animate, doing roughs/pencil tests only for the most difficult movements, but for the most part we just animated directly with clean lines. The drawing style allowed us to skip inbetweens and make some lines unfinished on purpose, but keeping its reading clarity.
Then on After Effects we also gave everything some crunch and texture to make the lines jiggly and closer to a hand-drawn look on paper.

On GIPHY we created a sticker pack of these animations that ended up getting really popular. At the time we are sharing this project, we counted - gasp - 103 million all time views on these guys stickers!

All done? Not yet. We also worked on lower thirds, stream overlays and transitions for the event. Some of those you can see on this video compilation of the participants games.
While editing it we could appreciate every game created by the jammers, and felt thankful for the opportunity of being part of such a cool project and community.
